Improving regional flood risk assessment using flood frequency and dendrogeomorphic analyses in mountain catchments impacted by tropical cyclones

چکیده

River floods frequently occur when tropical cyclones hit land. Nonetheless, systematic, long-term discharge data remain rather scarce in many countries, which prevent proper analysis of peak discharges occurring during floods. The Térraba catchment is the biggest and most dynamic Costa Rica. In this study, we developed regional flood-frequency analyses combining tree-ring based estimation measurement at monitoring stations to derive flood quartiles. Flood quartiles were combined with Topographic Wetness Index (TWI) determine hazards along floodplains. risk assessment was on a high-resolution mapping infrastructure, population density (as measure exposure), social development index (to represent vulnerability). We show that cyclone-induced can be assessed accurately including dendrogeomorphic reconstructions systematic measurements. also assessments performed large-scale catchments if both coarse detailed inputs are used. results study will useful for schemes promoting resilience local populations.

Assessing Current and Future Freshwater Flood Risk from North Atlantic Tropical Cyclones via Insurance Claims

The most recent decades have witnessed record breaking losses associated with U.S. landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs). Flood-related damages represent a large portion of these losses, and although storm surge is typically the main focus in the media and of warnings, much of the TC flood losses are instead freshwater-driven, often extending far inland from the landfall locations. Despite this a...

Flood forecasting in transboundary catchments using the Open Modeling Interface

Using satellite data for flood forecasting in catchments located in mid-latitudes is challenging to engineers and model developers, in no small part due to the plethora of data sets that need to be retrieved, combined, calibrated and used for simulation in real time. The differences between the various satellite rainfall data products and the continuous improvement in their quantity and quality...

The use of flood regime information in regional flood frequency analysis

Understanding the hydro-climatological controls on floods is fundamental for estimating flood frequency. The river flood regime is a reflection of a complex catchment hydrological response to flood producing processes. Hence, the catchment similarity in a flood regime is a feasible basis for identifying flood frequency pooling groups used in regional estimation of design events. This study desc...
